South Carolina's High Point - "Sassafras Mountain"

It was already 5pm when we left Georgia and headed for South Carolina. After getting lost (we headed towards the Tennessee border instead of South Carolina) we turned back and headed back east and spent more than two hours winding through ridiculously narrow cliff-face rounds in the dark surrounded by tall dark trees and mountains. You could say we were a little more than apprehensive! Good old trusty Mapquest had indicated the trip from Georgia to South Carolina would take 1 hour and 20 minutes. Maybe if we were flying! It took us over 4 hours. The South Carolina high peak is on Sassafras Mountain at 3,560 feet.
The peak is actually not a peak at all, as the mountain is actually on the border and shared with North Carolina. Hence, the peak is really only half way up a mountain. It was dark, and passing a school for the deaf and blind, we made our way up through a steep road before hitting a dead end with a gate. The peak was amount 5 minutes walk on a path up the hill. Given it was dark and we were in a deserted forest, I wasn't keen on getting our of the car but we were here and we had a goal to achieve. Armed with torches, cameras, a knife and mace...we walked up to a highpoint marker off towards the side. There didn't seem to be anything official on the site other than the marker. Taking the picture quickly, we ran back to the car. Thinking of unwelcome encounters with cougars, snakes or a hillbilly local with a gun, my heart was pumping.
