Mississippi's High Point - "Woodall Mountain"
This was our second big road trip, aiming to hit all the high points from the South in Mississippi to the North in Minnesota and back out east to Ohio. Packing the Durango full of camping and hiking gear, we left New Jersey in the early afternoon on the 20th October 2006. We drove straight down I-78 in PA and to I-81 through West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia (our 3rd time in Virginia along that I-81 stretch on what I think it the longest stretch of boring interstate though any one state). Crossing into Tennessee, we headed towards the town of Corinth near Mississippi's high point which is located very close to the border of Tennessee and Mississippi. Woodall Mountain, at 807 feet is a little mole hill located not far from homes in an extremely quiet and sparse area. We didn't arrive in the area until 11pm, driving along the dark road trying to find the highpoint. We couldn't have found it without out GPS having initially tried to follow directions in our book only to pass the same church on a deserted road twice. Driving up the dark and deserted road, you arrive to what is a deserted clearing among trees. There wasn't much to see. After a few photos we were on our way and find a hotel in Corinth.
