Louisana's High Point - "Driskill Mountain"

We left Corinth, Mississippi and headed out south west towards Louisana. It was the 21st October 2006. We passed many cotton fields which was awesome to see (coming from Australia you would hear about the cotton fields of the south and I was actually there!). I even got out of the car and picked some real cotton off the side of the road! We drive across to Louisana and could quickly understand the devastations of Hurricane Katrina as we looked across the flat flood plains. We land was so flat and it was obvious it had rained some days ago as there was still flooding in areas (including the visitor centre!). Driving along quiet country roads, we arrived at a deserted roadside church named Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church in the early afternoon were we parked the car. Driskill Mountin, at 535 feet isn't much of a mountain, but the high point is located in the forest behind the church so we could have to hike in. As were were leaving, a car pulled up and a local family asked whether their kid (about 10 years old) could hike with us as he had always wanted to do it, but they (mom) wasn't about to do it. So we started on our way along a path which was on private land and quite wooded. The kid was quite overweight and at times I wondered whether he would make it as we hiked up some steeper sections. It didn't take long before we reached the highpoint was marked with a little shelter built by local scounts. We all signed the high point register and took some photos before heading back. The trip took less than an hour which was nice as it was quite hot that day. The kid was really happy to have made it and was going to tell all his classmates he had climbed the highest point in Louisana. This was a future hiker in the making!
