North Carolina's High Point - "Mt Mitchell"

After finishing Virginia's Mount Rogers, we headed towards North Carolina and the Nantahala Campground which is an awesome riverside campground with a real hippy, or what Mark calls "living by the river" feel. It was busy which was suprising given how remote the campground seemed away from the highway and on the river. They had a band playing that night which was cool. We were able to sit by the campfire and enjoy the music and river atmosphere after that day's long hike.

The next morning, the 28th May 2006, we headed towards North Carolina's highest point Mount Mitchell which at 6,684feet was the highest point on the East Coast! Luckily this highpoint was a drive up, though it is hikeable.

The drive was quite pretty as the road wound its way to the top and very popular with touring motorcycles. Parking inthe busy car park, it was only a short walk to the high point which is marked with a building you could walk up and provided some great views of the North Carolinas /Tennessee mountain ranges.
